Zoom image | The Ampulla and Anointing spoon are two of the oldest and spiritually most important pieces used in the coronation ceremony. It is believed that the anointing spoon dates back as far as the 12th century.
The Ampulla contains Holy Oil, which is poured from the beak of the bird into the anointing spoon. The Archbishop of Canterbury then anoints the Sovereign prior to the crowning.
